If you just starting learning 3D animation, you must know about modeling.
Modeling is the first step in producing a 3D image or animation. You cannot render if you don't have an image or object to render. Modeling requires a balance of quality and speed. There are two aspects of the speed equation.
The first one is the more complex the model is, the long it will take to build.
The second one is, the more polygons an object has, the longer it will take to render. So the rule for modeling is, "if you really don't need it, don't build it". This rule applies to every single modeling situation. If you plan, it will help you, specially for animation. Do a preview before modeling, you will know which parts need your attention in your project.
Good luck.
